The phenomenon of the splitting of the moon

Purwakarta – The moon is Earth’s only satellite, and is the fifth largest in the solar system. Neither the Koran nor science, it turns out that he was once divided.


Summarized from various sources, based on modern research conducted by NASA, it was found that the Moon is not an inanimate object. The researchers used the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to observe the Moon.


The Moon has a diameter of 27%, a density of 60% and a mass of one per 81% of the mass of the Earth. Two researchers, Tom Watters of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum said the Moon has a fault called the Lobate Scarp, believed to be due to the moon’s crustal material pushing against each other. This fault is believed to have occurred due to the Moon’s crustal material pushing against each other causing cracks to occur.

Then, the researchers tried to find out when the fault occurred. Tom estimates that the fault may have occurred less than billions of years ago, maybe even less than hundreds of millions of years ago. According to Tom Watter “So, it indicates that something is causing the Moon to shrink or shrink”.


The emergence of the phenomenon of fractures or signs seen by the Moon being split is mentioned in one of the verses in the holy book of the Koran about 1,400 years ago. Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala says in Surah Al Qamar verse 1:

اِقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ

“As (the Day of Judgment) draws near, the moon splits.” (Surat al-Qamar: 1).


The splitting of the moon is also one of the miracles of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam as proof of prophethood before the polytheists.


وَاِنْ يَّرَوْا اٰيَةً يُّعْرِضُوْا وَيَقُوْلُوْا سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ

وَكَذَّبُوْا وَاتَّبَعُوْٓا اَهْوَاۤءَهُمْ وَكُلُّ اَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ

“And if they (the polytheists) see a sign (miracle), they turn and say: ‘(This is) perpetual magic. And they deny (the Prophet) and follow their desires, while every business there has been a decision’.” (Surah Al Qamar: 2–3).


The splitting of the moon occurred before the migration of the Prophet Muhammad to Medina. It was then that the disbelievers in Makkah asked the Prophet (S) about a verse that showed his sincerity and prophethood.

In the hadith narrated by Bukhari from the path of Anas bin Malik, it is stated that the people of Mecca asked the Prophet Muhammad to show signs (miracles). So he showed them where the moon was split into two parts so that they could see the cave of Hira from the gap between them.”



أنَّ أهلَ مكَّةَ سألُوا رسولَ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّم أنْ يُريَهُم آيَةً، فأراهُمُ القمَرَ شِقَّينِ، حتى رأوْا حِراءً بَينهُما 

Miracles are considered as one of the signs of the Hour and the Prophet SAW knew it happened. In an authentic hadith, it is stated:

خمسٌ قد مَضَيْنَ: الدخانُ، والقمرُ، والرومُ، والبطشةُ، واللِّزَامُ، فسوف يكون لزاما “

There are five things that have passed (happened), namely (the victory) of Rome (over Persia), Ad-Dukhan (white clouds), Al-Lizam, Al-Batsyah, and Al-Qamar (the splitting of the moon).”


In the book ‘Science in the Qur’an’ written by Nadiah Thayyarah, she revealed that the moon used to shine and then Allah turned off its light. “And We made the night and the day as two signs, then We blotted out the sign of the night and We made the sign of the day a light, so that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number of years and calculations. And We have explained everything clearly ,” reads Surah Al Isra’ Verse 12. This verse shows the existence of a scientific fact that was only known to the people in the 20th century, namely that the moon was originally a lit planet. The Quranic instructions on this matter are quite clear.


Currently, science may not be able to explain logically the miracle of the moon being split in two by the Prophet Muhammad. But these miracles are signs of greatness for mankind as Allah says in the following verse, “We will show them Our signs (power) in all areas and in themselves, until it becomes clear to them that the Qur’an is true. Is it not enough that verily your Lord is a witness over all things?” (Surah Fushshilat verse 53).
